Philzuid and Chief Conductor Duncan Ward welcome the summer with the warm, expressive music of Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland. Special guest Julia Bullock joins the orchestra for a programme that includes the enchanting Appalachian Spring Suite, a work that captures the spirit of hope and renewal.

For Appalachian Spring, Copland drew on every shade of his musical imagination to create the celebrated ballet score for the pioneering choreographer Martha Graham. The work marked Copland's breakthrough and earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Martha Graham also commissioned Barber to compose the score for her ballet Medea. With its passionate and dramatic music, the work draws you into a compelling dance drama of jealousy and revenge.

Knoxville: Summer of 1915 for soprano and orchestra evokes the warmth of long summer evenings and the wonder of childhood memories. The programme features acclaimed mezzo-soprano and Grammy Award winner Julia Bullock, who has previously performed Barber's Knoxville with the LA Philharmonic and the London Philharmonia.
