To accompany the new book Mapping the Mountains by geographer and cartophile Andrew Davies, the Dutch Mountain Film Festival is organising an exhibition at the Mijn Streek Library in HuB. Kerkrade. 

Mapping the Mountains displays remarkable maps from the history of mountain cartography and several historical maps of the region. Nowadays, anyone can view and reach their destination using their phone. That was not always the case: maps used to be drawn. 

Maps of mountainous areas were a separate category: a great deal of creativity was required to accurately and comprehensively depict the altitude. And in order to accurately represent that altitude, it was necessary to go into the mountains to measure all distances with heavy equipment. Mapmakers were therefore artists, explorers and mountaineers all at once.
